Stretching doesn't cure soreness

It's been measured many times and the effect is too small to feel. What does help is something else.

Soreness shows up between twelve and forty-eight hours after doing something you weren’t used to, and clears on its own in a few days. It isn’t lactic acid: that’s gone in under an hour. It’s micro-damage in the muscle and the inflammation that follows.

What the review says

A Cochrane review pooled the trials that tested stretching before, after, or both. The result: stretching reduces soreness by less than one point on a hundred-point scale. It exists, it can be measured, and nobody is going to notice it.

A later meta-analysis, this one focused on stretching after training, reaches the same place: neither soreness nor strength nor range of motion improves meaningfully.

So why does everyone still say it

Because stretching feels good while you do it, and we confuse “this relieves me now” with “this recovers me faster”. They’re different things. If you enjoy stretching, stretch: it does no harm. Just don’t do it expecting tomorrow to hurt less.

What does work

  • Time. Soreness goes on its own in two or three days, whatever you do.
  • Moving gently. Walking or running very slowly feels better than sitting still, even if it doesn’t shorten anything.
  • And above all, not giving yourself the same shock twice: the second time you do that exercise, the soreness is far smaller. Muscle adapts fast.

What to do tomorrow

  • If you’re sore, go out anyway but easy. It isn’t the day to push.
  • Don’t change the plan over it: soreness is normal when load goes up.
  • If it’s the same after five days, it isn’t soreness any more.
