Nose breathing doesn't make you run better

Breathe however the air comes in. As soon as it gets hard, the mouth wins, and that's fine.

Every so often the idea comes back that you should run breathing only through your nose: that it filters, that it humidifies, that it improves performance. The first two are true. The third doesn’t hold up.

What has been measured

When nasal, oral and combined breathing are compared in exercise testing, the conclusion repeats: no meaningful performance differences. And breathing only through the nose limits ventilation as soon as intensity rises, because the nose simply moves less air.

There’s an interesting detail: in some studies perceived effort was higher breathing through the mouth without any change in power. So the nose can make you feel more comfortable without making you more capable.

Why the mouth opens on its own

Because the body opens the mouth when it needs to move more air, and that always happens as soon as you go beyond a very gentle jog. It isn’t a technique fault: it’s the correct response. Forcing yourself not to is imposing an artificial limit.

One use that does make sense

If you force yourself to breathe through your nose on easy days, it forces you to actually go easy: as soon as you speed up the air runs out and you slow down by yourself. As a voluntary brake it works, just like the talk test. But what’s helping you there is the low pace, not the nose.

What to do tomorrow

  • Breathe however it comes. If your mouth opens, you’re doing it right.
  • If you want a way not to overdo easy days, use the talk test, which has the advantage of being validated.
  • In cold weather or with allergies, breathing through the nose for a while does help the air arrive less dry. That’s comfort, not performance.
